I'm wondering will Tomtom be available for the N97? Or whether there is a plan to release it.

I did see the iPhone version previewed which looked amazing, it even comes with a dock.

It's not available yet. But it's only a matter of time before it's released.

Maps 3.0 might do the trick though?

Loving OVI Maps 3 beta myself. There are a number of bugs, but hopefully they will be resolved prior to final release. The development team have said that the latest beta will also be the final beta, so maybe the release version isn't far away.

Some of the extras you get with OVI Maps 3.0 are as follows:

3D Landmarks
Speed Limit Warner (Not on all roads)
Safety Camera Warner (Gatso and light Cameras only)
maps.ovi.com synchronises places and routes with mobile client (Plan route online and synchronise to phone)

Some of these features require the purchase of licences.

TomTom has been upholding a position for a while now where it is not going to be creating a smartphone software. This is down to a case of the few ruining it for the many with people offering it free with a crack.

I don't know if TomTom will change this stance but it was developed for the iPhone as it is harder to develop a crack for it in that market place since it is all done via the App Store.

I must say that I can highly recommend Garmin Mobile as an alternative. Or there is the option of installing third party software to trick TomTom into thinking your internal GPS is external and then installing the latest mobile version at this current time.

Really do not want to pay for my Data Downloads...

If you have a PC, you can download the maps and the license through the Maps Loader and you don't need to do OTA data downloads.

As for the TomTom app on the iPhone, my suspicion is that you have to buy the dock in order to use it in the car for turn-by-turn because unless Apple changes their current developer agreement for v3, developing a program to encourages the use of the iPhone while driving is currently a no-no.

Lots of people waiting to see what happens with that as Apple had removed a couple of turn-by-turn apps from the AppStore so far.
