Nokia N97 vs Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

Following on from our  N97 vs iPhone comparison, it's now time to put the N97 up to the Xperia X1. Once again we'll state before the comparison that we don't yet have an N97 to do a full comparison but we can compare specs.

Both the N97 and the Xperia look the part, both featuring a touch screen as well as a slide out QWERTY keyboard. The N97 run on Symbian S60v5, whereas the Xperia runs on Microsoft Windows mobile 6.1.

Personally I've never been a fan or had much luck with Windows mobile devices, I've owned several and always sworn it would be my last but 6.1 apparently has been much improved over previous version, it's said to be more stable and feature rich. It would be interesting to hear from some X1 users.

Nokia N97

Xperia X1

Air Interface GSM/HSDPA GSM/UMT/HSDPA
Band Quad Quad
Dimensions 55 x 117 x 16 mm 53 x 111 x 17 mm
Onboard Storage 32GB 512MB with 400MB free
Memory Card Up to 32GB Up to 32GB
Text Input Resistive Touch screen with full QWERTY Resistive Touch screen with full QWERTY
Screen Size 3.5" 3.8" with 800px x 480px
Weight 150g 158 g
Talk Time Up to 6 hours Up to 10 hours
Standby Time Up to 430 hours Up to 833 hours
Camera 5mp with auto focus and duel LED flash 3.15mp, autofocus and flash
Video Recording VGA at 30fps VGA at 30fps
Push email Yes Yes
GPS Assisted GPS with Nokia Maps Assisted GPS
Bluetooth Yes v2.0 with A2DP Yes v2.0 with A2DP

Once again the Nokia N97 excels in the same areas:5mp  Camera and it's monster 32GB onboard storage. Nokia really pushed the boundaries with the onboard storage, doubling even the largest iPhone currently available. The Xperia though, has a slightly bigger and higher resolution screen. Something else notable about the Xperia is the battery life, both standby and talk time are almost double the N97, though it is particularly good and beats most competitors in this area.

Both phones are quite similar in size and shape and both particularly stylish, you'd not be shy pulling either out of your pocket in the pub. Though personally, the N97 has the slight edge for me.

X1 vs N97
I have an X1 which replaced an N95 - the X1 is much more usable, and the better battery life makes a big difference.

As for the N97 it sounds good, but the battery life would be a big issue for me, my previous N95 was dire in this department!

The camera on the X1 is disappointing, I expected more from Sony, and the loudspeaker is very poor - this may encourage me to look at other options but in every other respect the X1 is an excellent phone.

x1 vs n97
ive had all the p series sonys and wasnt too keen on moving to windows mobile, but now ive got the X1 the extremely large catalogue of software and tweeks are very impressive. theres one website with over 67000 programs! and the XDA developers forum has so many customisations and programs being produced every day theres just not time to try them all.lol. for me thats a major factor in sticking with the X1. i like the design of the X1 and the n97 is very similar so no real reason to switch because of that. the camera is perfectly fine and improving with each firmware upgrade so the nokias 5mp camera would be just for bragging rights. if the camera is an issue then buy a proper camera! the optical mouse is a big bonus too and the n97 doesnt have that. the n97 has a very large internal memory but ive got a 16gb memory card for the X1 and thats perfectly sufficent. also the 4 multi LEDs on the X1 are very handy and i dont think the N97 has anything like that. one thing i hate on a phone is having to press a button to see if theres a missed call or text. with the LEDS a quick glance is all thats needed, so for me notification LEDS are a must have feature on a modern phone. i dont really see any need for an X1 user to switch to the N97 but the nokia does seem a worthy alternative if you prefer nokias over sonys.

I own an xperia x1...and im stoked, ive had it for over2 months, and i still am amazed at how much i use it. the N97 does look mouth watering....Ive been following it for some time now. I will definitly have to get my hands on time before i make a decision.

x1 has too many options for me to stray away, and with 6,5 around the corner, and 7.0 at the end of the year, ill be surprised if anything gets my x1 outta my hands

Stick to Xperia
It's the high res and quality screen that make me thinks I'll be sticking with the Xperia. 800x480 makes remote desktop connections realistic for starters. Google maps looks simply awesome as well.
Loving the switch to Windows mobile from Symbian too (came from a P1i). Loads more apps and SPB panel and SPB Online make the phone even more amazing.

hi.. i am a sony x1 user and i think it is one of the best phones.. this is my first windows mobile phone and i have to admit it is a bit tricky and not very thumb friendly.. i was using an iphone before this and it was much more finger friendly and fast but iphone wasnt perfect either.. i like everything about this phone and i am not going to buy nokia n97 but i might buy sony ericsson idou which i think will be a amazing phone.. i am a huge fan of sony and apple products.. i hope the battery life of n97 will be better than other n series phones..

I own an xperia and the rate in which new software, hacks, tweaks and mods are available for it is just incredible!...So what if the n97 has 32g of memory(which i doubt any one will fully utilize) and a 5mp camera..The x1 jus kills the n97 with EVERYTHING else.. and the loudspeaker isn't a problem for me either cause there are registry hacks to improve that too smilies/smiley.gif

Symbian is just too bad
I love my Xperia X1. I moved from a Nokia N95 which I hated and despised as Symbian is just a fantastically limited, ugly and unfriendly OS. Windows Mobile eats it up as a pre-breakfast snack. With an X1 in your pocket you can be totally connected.

- X1 screen smaller and higher in resolution.
- X1 secondary camera higher in resolution.
- X1 battery performance is better.
- X1 Keyboard keys are more.
- X1 sound melody is better.
- X1 Processor is faster.

Sync Lotus
you can't sync with lotus on your computer, you have to sync it with the domino server. Software used is onebridge (onebridge.com). However the domino server has to support it. Cheers.

HEY! I don't know many things about N97 but I know one thing about my previous n97 and my bro's 5800 that I hate it and I will never go back to symbian. If you want to connect your phone to your pc and brows the internet in your phone via your desktop pc's shared internet connection you will do it in xperia by only running the usb connection in activesync mode but in nokia!!! I killed myself and it is impossible! It is one little among many advantages os WM 6.1 rather than symbian.

Hi
I own an X1 and i hate it because you can't make it default to a phone.
in other words you can not have it start as a phone, so if you are busy, you have get the stylus out and tap the phone menu to bring up the phone pad to make a call.
Yes i know its a small thing but it is after all, a phone and why doesn't Sony (or microsoft) put this option on it. you would expect more out of a $1500 (aust) dollar phone

Hello, Xperia is nice
I own an australian xperia x1a, I don't get the same video recording frame rate as the uk version. I too scared to update my rom. I wanted the google phone but realised that if I wanted software and for free I'd have to have either and iphone or nokia or winmobile phone. The xperia won because it has a keyboard. If you want to do emulation it helps having hardware keys which are mapable. Only finalburn and genpp and scummvm run good on xperia. You need the wvgafix3 to adjust screen sizes for games and apps compatibility. I hope sony ericson bring out more games like xtrak which has the best 3d ive seen on a phone. It makes iphone 3d games look like blocky playstation 1. xtrak looks better then nintendo ds and nearly as good as ps2. The xperia's built in ati graphics are a good start. The nokias have powervr chipsets which are quite good too but are not as powerful as this newer chipset. Get a xperia because you know you can run pocket pc software and you have a keyboard and a stylus and 3d graphics.

I'm an Xperia user and I really have to say that looking by the megapixel doesn't mean nokia has a better camera function.

Xperia's camera function is jaw-dropping. Very sharp, vivid and clear. The macro focus is really good too, it can be used as a daily digital camera, except when at night of course.

Dave, don't be silly, man. Just press the the 'Call Key' at the bottom left of your phone (the one with the symbol of a phone receiver on it), it will bring up the phone screen. No need to use the stylus at all, to access the contacts, even, becayse the phone keypad, does the job. Just type the name of the person you want to call in the phone key pad and his/her contact will show up.

It's you who needs to be replaced, not the phone.

This isn't how You make a comparison really. This is just a scratch of a comparison between two phones. You should have 5-6 videos of the n97 & X1's performances in meaning of speed, UI, graphics performance etc etc.
I really expected more from you Paul.

SE is way better
for those of you who want a nice phone with a lot of features that will eventually break down and have a lot of problems which won't be fixed unless you buy a new phone, I would advice them to stick with the n97. On the other hand, for those smart guys there who wants a great smart phone with real high quality and reliability, a phone that they can depend on and will last for a long time with them. My advice for them is Sony ericsson any day any time. SE products rock, trust me you won't regret buying there products; however, just be sure to buy the right device for you before purchasing any mobile.

To Charlie: If you dont feel like buying the X1 after watching their adverts, the advert would have failed on you. Coz dats the point of adverts; To interest you in the product.

To everyone out there: I love my X1. Its the right phone for me. I have now closed my eyes to any other phone model. Until my X1 breaks down lah. Doesn't seem like its gonna break down anytime soon though. smilies/grin.gif

N97 sold just not good
Hi, My experience with the N97 was a mess, the sepcs are great , but everything is unconsistent, me a windows mobile user could not do anything, exchange connect, only limited, applications.. nothing worthy, shared internet did not work, answering the phone is a mess, the screen rotates and changes by itself and had ate least on lock a day, so I sold it and bought an X1, much better , I cannot say I am too pleased it seems with the right sw I will get to function as my kaiser behaved.
The n97 is a mix of everything with a DOS O.S.

There are much more useful software products for N97 than for Xperia X1.
Latest example, just yesterday I have installed the remote desktop software on my Nokia N97, its called SymRDP, and now I can remotely and wirelessly connect my home and office computers from anywhere in the world!
Do they have it for Xperia X1? I doubt it.

Uhhhh, yes, it does, it is called Remote Desktop, like the one you get in Windows?
Even in Africa we know about these things....

The Xperia rocks harder than any phone outhere, as a previous poster said, its you that needs to be replaced, not the phone.... So good luck with the crappy Symbian OS locking you in, while I can do what I want on my WM6.5 X1....

SONY makes the most beautiful electronics ever, they just look beautiful !!! Just like a beautiful girl you will never know, but from tv, but i ask you: do you know all the crap you could find inside them? i have been using SONY phones for many years and i really got tired of giving them a chance, but try a nokia, that is something that SIMPLE: LAST FOREVER and what's come inside is 10 thousand better that sony crappy phones!! i dare you to throw a sony and a nokia out of a 10 floor building and see who will still be working ... bet you is you will get fun putting your sony together, while the nokia guy will call sony support from his phone hahaha

hey guys, if your really stuck then im telling you that ive played with both of these thoroughly and if you like giving phones new ROMs and having lots and lots of customizations and compatible software then get the x1 for sure! although i have to admit Nokia make excellent products and usually have more satisfying software in their products, the software of the n97 for me was disappointing but i love the design on both xperia x1 and nokia n97! If you are a Nokia fan you may be let down because nokias usual standards are higher but if you dont like windows mobile then dont get the x1, im just going to mention that you can run touch flo 3d and manila on one of the xperia panels, a thing called home 2 which can be another panel, you get access to the full functionality of spb mobile shell 3.0 free which you can get 3.5 aswell, you can make your phone look like the iphone and so much stuff can be done with the xperia so you see i like the xperia better but i was once in love with the n97 lol but the nokia tilt up screen is very nice as the xperia's only tilts a little, and the nokia does not have an optical mouse and the xperia does but please if you have done your research and like the n97 more then go for it! but if you are even preferring the xperia a tiny bit then buy it immediately!!! it wont let you down!!!

N97 worst phone ever!!!
i am being honest when i said that N97 is a USERS NIGHT MARE AND ALSO IT IS
THE WORST PHONE EVER PRODUCED BY NOKIA IN THIS CATEGORY. it hangs so
frequently and switches on and off at its sweet will, phone memory get
low..it is irritating.. it has been just 2 months since i have brought this
handset and i have visited the NOKIA CARE CENTRE 3 times for various
problems..i purchased this hand set in the hope that it will give trouble
free performance.. but that was not there.. i am rite in saying that NOKIA
IS EXPERIMENTING WITH CONSUMERS MONEY.nokia is not good in touch sceen
segement.. i have used 6 different models of nokia since 2000( to name a few
6300, n70,n73) and all of then have given a nice performance.. but
unfortunatly my experience with nokia's touch screen is not good.. nokia
should stay out of touch screen segement till they master the technology.. i
was a hard core fan of nokia mobile but this particular handset has made me
to rethink my loyality towards nokia..
i hope that my point is through now.

Nokia N97 piece of shit
I absolutely agree with this video. I'm so disappointed with this phone and regret buying it. It doesn't stand a chance against any other smartphones and isn't even stable enough to beat a cheap, basic phone that would be way more responsive and stable than this piece of shit. When I saw Nokia's commercial, I was fascinated and thought this would be my dreamphone, but in reality it's like living in hell, because I've just spent so much money, and I can't even sell it because nobody wants to buy88smilies/sad.gifsmilies/angry.gifsmilies/angry.gifsmilies/angry.gif

Hey ?
I dunno what they sold you but it wasnt a nokia n97, im so happy with mine!!! i cant say symbian is the best os but WM certainly ist the best either, i had a x1 and i wasnt disapointed with it because it had all the usual windows bugs but still worked well i only gave it away because my sis lost hers and bought the n97, man it is such a good phone the keyboard is so good and people complain to much about pressing the f button to write numbres but you only need to push for 2 sec and the numbers just pop in there, the same works for all blue symbols on the keys, i dunno but it works so good. I had to restar the X1 so many times but the n97 hangs but all i have to do is wait a little bit and it is good to go. As far as software go i was able to do so much more out of the box with the n97 than with the x1. There are millions of apps for the x1, well not the x1, i mean windows mobile, but a lot of thoes apps you have to pay and other dont work for the x1 resolution or touch screen, there is so much phones with winMobile that out of those million apps only a few are X1 optimized. Cheers

As per the comparison btwn x1 & n97, I think x1 is much better option. Simply coz I have 1 & x1 has both styling and productivity. Sometimes I feel x1 has more productivity than an Iphone ( which I had earlier.)

Symbian - Windows
I have X1 for a year, and still using P910i. For me it is the best phone made ever. Pity for bad camera and lack of Wi-Fi and GPS.

X1 is fine piece of gadget, but it is not THE PHONE. It is impossible to make a call on sunny ski slope - you can't see anything. You don't know time when did you make a call yesterday, not to mention a week or month ago. You can't memorize more than ONE person's mobile phone number - stupid Outlook DB. And many other stupid Windows things.

i hate windows mobile
i have tried 3 windows mobile phone

1st the smart amazing phone or i-mate smartphone as int. name its windows mobile unkown long ago

2nd the samsung omnia 16gb 2nd gen win mo 6.1

3rd the fucking sony x1

as a techy person i was so meticulous when it comes to phone specs
i prefered much the camera at least 5megapixel and bright flash
ofcourse the memory at least i can have 16gb memory

as i mentioned on the top
all of that phone sucks

omnia and x1 are both trash
it hangs
lags
very slow
very poor sound
camera resolution not fine
display not good
i hate windows mobile
i wont use that again
now im back with my favorite nokia
im happy with my n97 so much...

Lots of specialists tell that mortgage loans help people to live the way they want, just because they can feel free to buy necessary stuff. Furthermore, different banks offer student loan for different persons.

Laptop battery can get confusing if you are not certain what you are looking for or how to look for it. It always helps to have a quick guide to the basics of a Hp 510 Battery and how you can go ahead and find one that will work in your laptop. It also helps to know the different kinds of batteries available and also some basic safety tips that go along with the proper handling of a Hp 530 Battery to avoid damage to your laptop and to yourself.

There are many different kinds of laptop batteries and there is more than one proper battery for your laptop computer. Many models of laptop computers have an optional Sony vgp-bpl2c Battery that you can purchase that allows you more time on a charge. These are extremely convenient if you know that you will be going through long periods where you will be without the ability to recharge your laptop battery. These extra life batteries are also very convenient for long trips on planes or trains if you know you will need to get work done on those trips. Not every laptop can accommodate an extended life battery so be certain that your laptop has the ability to accommodate the extended life sony vgp bps2a Battery before you try to install it into your laptop.
