Nokia N97 stress test
Written by Paul

We were gutted when we discovered the US was to receive the N97 first, as we'd not have any exclusives. Anyway after some brain storming we decided it would be useful if we truly put the Nokia N97 through it's paces with a number of stress tests.

Test 1: Screen scratch test. We used the stylus, a coin and a key to test just how scratch resistant the screen on the Nokia N97 is. The result? Hardly a mark on the screen. I really don't think you'd need a screen protector. Though I guess it always adds an extra layer of protection.

Test 2: Pocket test. We placed the phone in a bag, along with coins and keys to see what damage could be done if you accidentally put the phone in your pocket with other stuff. Once again the N97 come out unscathed. Top marks so far.

Test 3: Paintwork scratch test. This time we tested how easily the paint work scuffed and scratched. Overall I we were pretty impressed with how well the paint work held up. The most fragile paintwork was on the rim of the keypad where the paint flaked off pretty easily, though generally this part of the phone will be protected by the keypad

Test 4: Cereal test: So just what happens if you drop your N97 in a bowl of cereal? Well it gets wet obviously. The phone is still fully functioning at this point, minus the menu key.

Test 5: Wash test: If you happen to drop your N97 in a bowl of cornflakes, you're gonna need to wash it off right? Well no, not exactly, but for testing purposes we did. As you'll see in the video, washing with soap and water put the N97 out of action for roughly 2.5 hours, but minus some condensation on the screen, it's now fully functioning and ready for tomorrows tests!

P.S please feel free to post suggestions for other stress tests you'd like to see, we'll fulfill as many as we can.

Carl, it really was painful. But at the same time, we've learned some new stuff about the N97 build quality, so we're not too gutted.

After we've finished our tests, I think I'll have to buy another.

@Lukasz, for sure. We didn't REALLY wash it to remove the milk, it was just a more dramatic "wet test".

@Carl ha, I've accidentally washed the odd £5 note, but never a mobile phone... YET!

just a concern, if the rim of the keypad flakes off does this include the paint around the camera and volume keys? that part is not very well protected. try scratchin the camera and volume buttons too!

@ dcastrog I'll try that tomorrow but as it's the same part, I imagine it's going to scratch equally as easily. Though I was using a key with a reasonable pressure, the pocket test hasn't produced a scuff in that area. I'll try a couple of things with it tomorrow and upload the video with the results.

On the other hand this was very informative and made me think that maybe I won't need to buy a screen protector after all. So thank you both for saving me money and making me giggle also......smilies/grin.gif

Research
All in the aid of Research, well done guys.! It takes some balls to do what you have done, and this helps many N97 owners, or anyone considering investing in an N97, know exactly what endurance the N97 can withstand. Im looking very much forward to the drop tests you carry out, as Im interested to see how well the lightweight alloy hinge mechanism fares.!

Keep up the great work. I will cover this over on NokiaUsers.net for you, which should get you more coverage.

what about the standard drop test? surprised that wasn't the first one ya did. Of course i dont recommend destroying a million pound phone lol, but if you're hell bent on doing so that is the most classic mishap to happen, everyone ends up dropping it on the concrete at some time or another

The first recordings did not come out too well, light was poor as we we're waiting for the phone to dry out. Poor phone, it thought it was having the day off^^

As @Daniel suggests running it over with a car.
It happened to me once i had a Pharos Travler 525 and i was getting in to my car it slipped out of my packet and on to the sand, and ran it over with one wheel. Surprisingly when i picked it up it was still working all settings got erased and i had to reconfigure it. There was no visible damage to the phone like cracks. But after couple of minutes it started freezing and restarting every time it restarted i had to reconfigure the settings. But they replaced it with a new one smilies/smiley.gif)

@ Slevin

We placed the phone next to the fan on the ps3 when we realised that just leaving it out in the open to dry naturally was taking too long. The keyboard was fully functional after the phone was turning back on. However, the menu button and the call/hangup buttons did take a little longer to start working again. The menu button didnt start working until this morning, a good 12+ after the initial water test.

I'm really impressed with the results. It looks like a really robust phone. Much more robust than the Palm devices I had (the screen of my Treo 650 stopped working after a fall of only 30cm on gravel). Also much more robust than the Palm Pre (http://www.intomobile.com/2009...-a-dj.html) and more robust than the iphone 3g (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0v5nK-D56I).

Also good to see how much touch screen technology has improved over the years. Just consider what happened in around the year 2000 with my old Palm V. It had been raining outside and my hair was wet. After getting home, I sat down and took out my Palm V. Then a single drop of water dropped on the screen and, before I could react, I watched this drop slide down the screen until it disappeared inside the device and 2 seconds later... ploink... the device stopped. 48 hours of drying did not help. I had to send it back for repairs and was 6 weeks without my precious palm.

I just saw this posted on Engadget and its a great set of tests. Agonising for any tech fan to watch but a real show if the build quality of the N97!

How about once you're finished testing it you whack it on eBay for a charity auction? The famed, stress tested N97!

Keep up the good work!

the final test
Thanks to the internet, only one N97 in the world had to go through such agonizing tests.

As for final tests, here are some suggestions:
* slamming a car door shut with the N97 in between (suggested by a colleague of mine)
* driving over it with a really large aeroplane or other vehicle (not original)
* a just married version dragging an N97 along the back of a car for a couple of miles

And of course, there is the final test. Will it blend? (willitblend.com).

N97 washing machine test?
Hi, would just like to suggest another test (if its not too late). What about dumping it into a running washing machine with all the water and all the detergent? This was done by someone with the Nokia 5800 before and the (now rather famous) video of it is somewhere on the internet, I believe.

Great videos!

Just wanted to mention one thing.

You didn't notice in your video, but the back cover came slightly loose after the hip-height drop test on pavement. You did not snap it back on firmly, you can see this just after 3.20 on the video. Perhaps this is why the back cover came off completely after the final drop.

A very robust phone though!

That is interesting. You are indeed correct. I am a little annoyed I did not spot that during the test. That being said tho, we dropped the phone several times over them 2 days and at least 2 or 3 times from head height on pavement. Every single time with that 'combo' we had the same result... the back coming away and the battery spilling out. Never did the back come off on any of the other combos at any time. So, yes you are right that the back was not snapped closed properly, but imho - it would not have made a difference on the evidence of previous drops.

I recently got a N97 and I see a lot of scratches on it. Are the scratches on the factory-fitted screen protector (the one with silver border) or are they actually on the screen? If I remove this protector, would the scratches disappear?

There are many different kinds of laptop batteries and there is more than one proper battery for your laptop computer. Many models of laptop computers have an optional Sony vgp-bpl2c Battery that you can purchase that allows you more time on a charge. These are extremely convenient if you know that you will be going through long periods where you will be without the ability to recharge your laptop battery. These extra life batteries are also very convenient for long trips on planes or trains if you know you will need to get work done on those trips. Not every laptop can accommodate an extended life battery so be certain that your laptop has the ability to accommodate the extended life sony vgp bps2a Battery before you try to install it into your laptop.
