A big yo.... Does any of you clever peeps know which video files the N97 play ie: mp4, avi ect... i want to watch stuff like i could on my trusty N95 8GB

Yes, MP4 H.264, or 3GP, both of which there are plenty of free converters for. The native player on the N97 at this time does not support AVI or basically any other format, also remember that if you convert a movie, keep the file size below 2Gb if you want the player to recognize it.

I don't think there are any free ones at this very moment, but I think some are being worked, such as VLC, and which others that will be free, again I'm not sure at this time. It is also possible that the next FW update will bring support for other formats.

Sorry for diving into this one a little late, but the video file formats that Nokia list as supported on the N97 are:

3GPP formats (H.263)
Flash Video
H.264/AVC
MPEG-4
RealVideo 7
RealVideo 8
RealVideo 9
RealVideo 10
WMV 9
